The original Blackgate Prison was closed after decades of service. It was build in the late 1800s and eventually condemned by Amnesty International for its completely inhumane conditions. The prison was then passed under new management, and began to once again both house Gotham City’s criminals and serve as a pre-trial detention center. It’s isolated in Gotham Bay to prevent escapes.

  • - Currently has 273 guards who commute daily by boat, and are watched

  •   over by Warden Tom Lansky.

  • - Said to have some of the most sophisticated prison defenses, all developed

  •   by Wayne Industries.

  • - Though New York no longer has the death penalty, Blackgate’s Death Row

  •   (located in the lowest level of the prison) still exists and hasn’t been re-

  •   purposed, even in vacancy. Criminals were executed on Blackgate Rock,

  •   which had a gallows that stood for more than a century. A Total of 313 men

  •   have been executed.

  • - The prison is designed to house 900 convicts, but they’ve been forced over   the years to hold in excess of twice that number.

  • - Only about 300 prisoners have been women.
