If you say that the oldest Bowery residents adapted the name from New York City’s Bowery, you’ll probably get a kick in the teeth. Nevertheless, the names have the same roots in an anglicisation of the Dutch bouwerij, derived from an antiquated Dutch word for “farm”. Nowadays, the city has expanded enough to swallow the old farming district and the farms have long since closed.
